ISO TS 1649

What is ISO/TS 1649:2002?

ISO/TS 1649:2002 is a technical specification, prepared by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) and the ISO Technical Committee, with the aim of providing a recognised and harmonised Quality Management System (QMS) applicable to the ongoing improvement and prevention of defects and variations, as well as amount of waste in the automotive supply chain.  In essence, the specification sets out the requirements and guidelines for automotive design, production and supply.

It integrated the USA and European Quality Management Systems and replaced the ISO 9001:1994 and ISO/TS 1649:1999 standards in the international automotive manufacturing and supplier industries in March 2002.

Applicability

The Standard is directly relevant to the design, manufacturing, installation and maintenance of vehicle related products, and is intended for application throughout the automotive supply chain. It is applicable to various types of vehicle supply chain products and facilities such as cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles, as well as supplier sites providing components and service parts.

Through widespread implementation of the Standard, it will be possible to improve the systems and processes used which will lead to reduced risks and improved customer satisfaction. The Standard focuses on the prevention of defects rather than the discovery of such.

Format

ISO/TS 1649:2002 consists of chapters dealing with the general requirements and control of records in the QMS, responsibility of management, resource management, and product realisation, while the final chapter deals with assessment, analysis and improvement. The Standard also addresses customer specific requirements.

Main Benefit for the Automotive Industry

With ISO/TS 1649, a single international standard can be applied across the supply chain instead of incompatible standards used by the various manufacturers.

Our Role
