ISO 45001:2018

What is ISO 45001:2018?

ISO 45001:2018 is a worldwide accepted Standard which outlines Good Practice requirements for the development and management of an organisation’s Occupational Health & Safety Management System.

The Standard was developed in response to the international demand for a widely recognised standard according to which safer workplace conditions could be created and hazards controlled. The subsequent Standard provides the necessary framework in which an organisation can develop controls and processes, and integrate such into a single risk management system.

It is not industry or organisation sized specific and can therefore be implemented by small and large companies alike within any industry. In essence, the ISO 45001:2018 can be used as a guideline for the creation of the safest possible workplace to meet statutory, customer and standard requirements.

The Standard was written by leading certification and standard authorities, including the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) in conjunction with experts in the relevant fields.

ISO 45001:2018 compliance holds several benefits including:

  • Confirmation of an organisation’s commitment to the safety and wellbeing of its employees, shareholders, customers and visitors.
  • Reduction in costs related to accidents, injuries, and disease.
  • Improvement in productivity because accidents and illness related downtime is minimised.
  • Confirmation of compliance with relevant statutory requirements for safety.
  • Identification of potential hazards and guidelines for the setting up of controls to manage such situations.
  • Minimisation of risks to employees and visitors.
  • Integration with existing management systems.
  • Improvement of the existing Occupational Health & Safety system of an organisation.

ISO 45001:2018 provides the guidelines for the development of documentation, policies, and procedures regarding training, risk assessment, permits to work, hazardous substances, equipment, accident treatment and reporting, as well as first aid fatalities. It also outlines requirements for protection against noise, fire and injury when working on high platforms. Other areas covered include working in the vicinity of specific conditions such as hot water, sprinklers and excessive noise.

The above are but a few of the work conditions and requirements outlined in the Standard. WWISE helps your organisation to assess your current OH&S and to set up the necessary policies and procedures for optimal safety of employees and visitors.
